Rhubarb!

Rhubarb Coffee Cake

Topping - 1/4 cup brown sugar, 1/2 tsp cinnamon, 1 tbsp finely grated orange peel (although if I don't have an orange, I sometimes leave this out!) mixed together in a small bowl

Cake - 2 cups unbleached flour, 3/4 cup sugar, 2 tsp baking powder, 1/2 tsp baking soda, 1/2 tsp salt, 1 egg, 1 tsp vanilla, 1/3 cup oil, 1 cup orange juice, 1 1/2 cups chopped rhubarb

1.  Stir dry ingredients together in a medium bowl.

2.  In another bowl, mix wet ingredients.  Then add wet ingredients to dry, and stir until combined.

3.  Spread half the batter in a greased 8-inch (2 L) square glass baking pan.  Spread rhubarb over all, then top with remaining batter.  Sprinkle topping over surface.

4.  Bake in 325 deg. F oven for about 40 minutes, or until done.  May be served warm or after cooling on a wire rack.

Sermons On-Line?

I’ll be publishing ten sermons with CSS Publishing Company next year. This is a joint project with three other authors under the very un-glamourous working title Sermons on the Second Readings, Year C. CSS has done this lectionary-based sermon series for a number of years, but this is the first time I’ve been a part of it, thanks to a Methodist minister friend who has published with CSS before. We thought it would be cool to be part of the same book, but with deadlines looming mid-summer, I imagine myself not-so-cool working at the computer on a hot day!

Vietnamese Ministry Begins!!

to pray, to meet together once a month, to help befriend and integrate this ministry as part of Emmanuel. We are looking for 3 or 4 more people who might be willing to join us--no one is too old or too young to be a part of this, since the Vietnamese ministry is for all ages: children, youth, and adults.  And the time commitment will be quite flexible, so if you’re interested, please add a comment or email me!

Worship as Pastoral Care

I wasn't able to be there in person, but even later listening to the cd, the service spoke to me in a powerful way about mental health/mental illness and the church.  The readings, Scripture, sermon, songs and prayers were words of healing and hope, reminding me again of how much God loves us all as frail and fragile human beings, and how we might also demonstrate that love as we care for one another.
